1959 Profile: Phil King

Halfback
No. 24
Vanderbilt
"Phil King (24), the Giants' No. 1 draft choice of 1958, is the 'swing' man of the New York backfield. He's ready, willing and able to do a bang-up job at either fullback or halfback. The 6-4, 223-pound Vanderbilt graduate is a riproaring runner and an elusive pass catcher. He's nicknamed 'Chief' because of his Cherokee ancestry."

-1959 New York Giants Official Program (Yankee Stadium, November 8)

"Phil King was drafted No. 1 in 1958 and developed into a versatile, valuable backfield alternate, playing all three positions. He gained 316 yards rushing and caught 11 passes for another 132 yards. He showed tremendous drive and good open-field speed. He gives the Giants three good receivers in the backfield.
King set an all-time rushing record for Vanderbilt. He played in the Blue-Gray, Senior Bowl and Gator Bowl games and was a corner man on defense. He threw the javelin 195 feet and ran as a 10-second man in track.
Born June 22, 1936, Phil is part Indian and his nickname is 'the Chief.' He has been employed as a construction worker. He married his high school sweetheart, Patsy Dean Keel. He holds an ROTC commission."

-1959 Cleveland Browns Official Program

"A hard-charging, fast-starting back who was the No. 1 draft choice in 1958, Phil had a fine run at Vanderbilt where he set the school's all-time rushing record. He also threw the javelin and was a 10-second track star. Players call this part-Indian 'The Chief.' He has been used in the fullback post and threatens to have a long and useful career with the club.
Phil lives in Nashville, Tennessee."
