1959 Profile: Mel Triplett

Fullback
No. 33
Toledo
"Triplett is a powerhouse plunging fullback who showed unusual progress as a rookie last year. He's very big, very strong and very fast and has terrific determination. He averaged four yards a carry, gaining 138 yards on 34 tries. Triplett was the No. 1 fullback in the College All-Star Game last summer before joining the Giants.
He majored in sociology in college, played football, worked eight hours a night and seemed to thrive on such a regime. He captained the Toledo football team and was the Giants' No. 5 draft choice in 1955.
Triplett is married, with five children."

-1956 Jay Publishing

"Triplett in 1956 was a powerhouse fullback who regularly hit the line like a bull elephant, gaining 515 yards on 125 carries (a 4.1 average) and scoring six touchdowns. Then, in the championship game, he scored the first touchdown of the day, plowing over and through half a dozen tacklers, a blocking guard and the umpire for 17 yards. Triplett was the game's MVP on offense.
He is the type of blocker for other ball carriers who hits enemy defenders hard enough to hurt them, making them unwilling to try that earnestly the next time. In his third season with the Giants, he is still learning.
Triplett captained his college team and was named to the All-Star Game. He was the No. 5 draft choice in 1955.
He's married, with five children."

-1957 Jay Publishing

-Pro Football Handbook 1959

"For five years, Mel Triplett (33) has provided the Giants with lethal blocking and powerful running from the fullback position. The 215-pound Ohioan, drafted No. 5 by the Giants in 1955 after winning All-Ohio honors at the University of Toledo, hits the line with tremendous impact and keeps chugging for extra yards after being tackled.
Mel is the father of five children."
