1972 Giants Defensive Back Profiles

WILLIE WILLIAMS
Cornerback
No. 41
Grambling
"Williams led the Giants in interceptions last season, grabbing off five. He ran them back 58 yards.
Willie has bounced around during his pro career. He was selected by the Giants in the pro draft of 1965 but elected to sign with the AFL Oakland Raiders. He was released by Oakland in 1967 and signed on with the Giants, and has been a regular since he came to New York. Willie led the league in interceptions in 1968 with 10 and played in the 1969 Pro Bowl. He has also been a punter and a kick return man during his years in the AFL and NFL.
Williams likes golf, tennis, swimming and basketball. The Giants call him 'Wimp.' "

PETE ATHAS
Cornerback
No. 45
Tennessee
"One of the most versatile members of the Giants, playing both offense and defense, Pete gained three yards on a running play last year and returned three punts 21 yards.
Pete came to the Giants as a free agent after starring for two seasons in the Continental League. He was originally drafted by Dallas."

RICHMOND FLOWERS
Strong Safety
No. 44
Tennessee
Richmond was acquired as part of the trade that sent Clifton McNeil to the Redskins. Along with starting duty at strong safety, he's proven to be a valuable kickoff returner, with eight last year for 156 yards and a 19.5 average.
He earned three letters at Tennessee as a wide receiver and a running back. In 1968 he was second in the SEC in both touchdowns (7) and points (42).

SPIDER LOCKHART
Free Safety
No. 43
North Texas State
"Lockhart intercepted three passes last season for the alert New York secondary and returned one 31 yards. He is skinny even for a defensive back and the Giants nicknamed him Spider because of his thread-like frame, but he knocks down 210-pound fullbacks with punishing authority.
Spider was a basketball star in college but went unnoticed by most of the pro football scouts. He was picked 13th by the Giants."

-John Devaney, The Complete Handbook of Pro Football, 1972 Edition

"When the  Giants defeated the Bills 20-6 at Yankee Stadium, December 6, 1970, Spider enjoyed one of his finest days in pro football. He got to the quarterback four times by himself on the safety blitz and was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Week.
Spider's hobby is photography."
