"Although hampered by injuries during his first two years at the University of Texas, Ernie came into national prominence in 1964 as the Longhorns rolled to a 9-1 record and then defeated favored Alabama, led by Joe Namath, in the Orange Bowl. Ernie had two scoring runs, one an Orange Bowl record 79-yarder. He carried the ball 154 times for Texas that year for 574 yards averaging four yards a try.
Ernie's father played baseball for the Dodgers."
